Why do we celebrate Earth Day: Since 1970, every year on April 22, we celebrate Earth Day. Earth day is dedicated to our native planet, our mother Earth and all the issues surrounding it, the main aim is to raise awareness on the need for conservation of natural resources and saving the planet from pollution and global warming. It is celebrated in more than 192 countries and has become one of the most widely celebrated environmental events across the globe.

History of Earth Day:

Americans were using large amounts of leaded gas through huge and inefficient automobiles. Smoke and sludge were thrown out from industries which was the major cause of water and air pollution in the surrounding area. People were unaware about the health problems that was caused by polluted environment.

Senator Gaylord Nelson, the junior senator from Wisconsin was greatly concerned about the deteriorating environment. A massive oil spill took place in Santa Barbara, California after which student anti-war movement started. Looking at this situation, Senator Nelson wanted to create awareness among people about the harmful effects of pollution in the environment.

Earth day was celebrated on 1970 across America and it gained great media attention.

In 1990, a group of environmental leaders organized another major campaign for the planet. Earth Day went global, mobilizing 200 million people in 141 countries and lifting environmental issues onto the world stage. Since then, Earth Day is celebrated on 22nd April every year globally.

Significance of Earth Day:

People today face problems like shortage of food, increased global warming, changing weather patterns and high fuel prices. It is important to increase awareness to create a sustainable environment in future which will gradually reduce the effect of problems faced today.

More than 1 billion people participate in Earth Day activities each year and various policies, acts are sanctioned to conserve earth’s natural resources. It is a day that recognizes the importance of our planet, both children and adults become conscious about the strategies which they can adopt in their daily life to ensure cleaner environment.
