William Shakespeare world’s greatest poet

Born in England, William Shakespeare was an English poet, playwright and actor. He is the greatest writer in
English literature and is often called England’s national poet and Bard of Avon. He has written 154 sonnets, 3
long poems and 39 plays, he published 2 narrative poems on sexual themes like ‘Venus and Adonis’ and ‘The
Rape of Lucrece’ in 1593-94. ‘Lover’s complaint’, ‘phoenix and the turtle’, ‘the passionate pilgrim’ are some of his
other works.

William Wordsworth world’s greatest poets

Born on 7th April in England, William Wordsworth was an English romantic poet, his greatest, creative all time
outstanding work was considered to be ‘The Prelude’ a semi-autobiographical poem. Wordsworth made his
debut as a writer in 1787 when he published a sonnet in The European Magazine. He wrote 387 poems and it
included works like ‘Lines written a few miles above Tintern abbey’, ‘Ode: Intimations of immortality from
recollections of early childhood’, ‘we are seven’ and so on.

Emily Dickinson

She was and American poet born on 10 th December 1830, and was little known during her life. She had written
1800 poems but only 11 of them were published before her death. Her poems were unique for that era and
contained short lines without titles, slant rhymes and unconventional capitalisation, punctuation. The most
popular book of her is ‘The poems of Emily Dickinson’ published in 1955 which is a compilation of her complete,
unaltered poems.

John Donne

He was born on 22 January and was an English poet, scholar, soldier and secretary. John Donne was
considered a well-known representative of the metaphysical poets. His poetic style included sonnets, love
poems, religious poems, epigrams, elegies, songs. His works included ‘Bia Thanatos’, ‘Pseudo-Martyr’, ‘Ignatius
His Conclave’ and so on.

Walt Whitman

Born on 31st May 1819, Walt Whitman was an American poet, essayist and journalist. He was the most influential
poet in America and was also known as the father of ‘free verse’. His poetry collection ‘Leaves on grass’ was
very controversial and was also described as obscene for its overt sensuality. His other poems are ‘song of

Rabindranath Tagore

Born on 7th May 1861 at Kolkata, West Bengal in India, Rabindranath Tagore was a poet, writer, playwright,
composer, philosopher, social reformer and painter. He reformed Bengali literature with contextual modernism,
he was referred to as ‘Bard of Bengal’ and was a fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society. His poem ‘Gitanjali’ was
internationally acclaimed and he was awarded with Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913. Tagore was the first non-
European to receive a Nobel Prize after Theodore Roosevelt. ‘Manasi’, ‘Sonar Tori’ (Golden Boat), ‘Balaka’ (Wild
Geese) are some of his other contributions to the art of poetry.

Jalāl al-Dīn Muḥammad Rūmī ‘Rumi’

Jalāl al-Dīn Muḥammad Rūmī also known as Rumi was born on 30th September 1207, he was a Persian poet,
Islamic scholar and Sufi mystic from Afghanistan. His poems have been widely translated to many languages and is described as the most popular poet in the United States. His best-known work is ‘Maṭnawīye Manawī’
(Spiritual Couplets) which is the most influential form of Sufism. His other work included ‘Dīwān-e Kabīr’ (Great
Work) or ‘Dīwān-e Shams-e Tabrīzī’ (The Works of Shams of Tabriz) and has written 35000 Persian couplets in
Turkish Language, 14 couplets in Greek language.

Sylvia Plath world’s greatest poets

Sylvia Plath was an American poet, novelist and short story writer. She was born on 27th October, 1932 and is
best known for her confessional poetry. Two of her published collections, ‘The Colossus’ and ‘Ariel’ were very
well acclaimed. She was awarded Pulitzer Prize in poetry for her book ‘The collected poems’ published in 1982.
