Poetry is one of humanity’s most precious forms of cultural and linguistic expression and identity. Poetry has the power to become a catalyst in transforming humanity, shared values for dialogues and peace. With an intention of supporting linguistic diversity and endangered languages World Poetry Day is celebrated on 21st March. It is celebrated to honour poets, revive oral traditions of poetry recitals, promote reading, writing and teaching of poetry.

History of World Poetry Day

Poetry is a beautiful form of expression and no other type of literature can create feelings and emotions as poetry. It is believed that poetry was first surfaced during 2000B.C. but it is likely to have developed even before that. Different types of poetry trended in different era and has also undergone transformation but the core purpose remained same. Poetry can be found in history of every nation. World poetry day is celebrated every year on March 21, UNESCO adopted it in 1999 on occasion of its 30 th General Conference held in Paris give encouragement to poets and readers of poetry all over world. Poetry can be converged with other mediums of expression such as music, dance, painting and more.

Significance of World Poetry Day

Poetry is for everyone. On World Poetry Day various poetry festivals are held worldwide through social media platforms and various live competitions. Poetry is indeed essence of a language and helps in celebrating the diversity

Many poets come together to celebrate this day and help others participating to read poems and understand it. They help in spreading awareness on writing poems and reading it to overcome linguistic diversity. It helps in supporting the emerging talents of future generations Some of us are hesitant to try out poetry thinking it is hard to understand, to overcome this fear various educational institutions held poetry competition and encourage students to participate in them.
