World Water Day – 22 March – History & Significance

World Water Day is celebrated on 22nd March every year and the purpose of celebrating it every year is to create
awareness about the importance of water and to encourage the sustainable management of freshwater resources.
The main aim is to take necessary actions to solve the issues relating to global water crisis. In 2015, United Nations
adopted Sustainable Development Goals in order to end poverty, protect the planet and provide sustainable future for all by 2030. There are 17 sustainable development goals that were introduced as a part of this framework. World
Water Day is also celebrated to focus on the 6th goal of the SDG: clean water and sanitation for all by 2030.

History of World Water Day:

March 22 was declared as World Water Day in the United Nations General Assembly of 22 December 1992, and from 1993 every year 22 March was observed and celebrated as World Water Day. Since then, activities such as promotion of public awareness through documentaries and other marketing strategies were adopted. Round table seminars, conferences took place to discuss about the conservation and development of water resources.

Significance of World Water Day:

Water plays a crucial role in socio-economic development and is needed for human health, livelihood. Without water earth will be without any living beings. 71% of our planet is covered by water but only 2.5% water is fresh and drinkable, with the constant increase in human population the need for more water has become a necessity. Because of climatic changes and global warming issues, relying completely on earth’s natural water recycling process is not enough thus, it is necessary to set water conservation strategies for future.

A new World Water Development Report is released each year on or before World Water Day, to provide decision-
makers with tools to frame and implement sustainable water policies. The annual theme for World Water Day is
aligned based on this report.

What is the theme of WWD 2022?

This year, the theme is “Groundwater: Making the invisible visible”.
