Bell bottom movie starring Akshay Kumar, Lara Dutta, Vaani Kapoor and Huma Qureshi, this movie is now streaming on Amazon Prime.
I have always been a fan of Akshay Kumar patriotic and spy-thriller movies. In fact, Baby is one of my favourite movies. But Bell bottom was a major turn-off and here’s why!

It has been stated that Bell bottom is inspired by real hijack incident in 1984 during the reign of Indira Gandhi as Prime Minister of India. But there were some major goof-ups and errs I couldn’t ignore. For example, first Kabaddi world cup was held in 2004 but when the plane was hijacked 1984, girls Kabaddi team was on the flight. And also, Vaani Kapoor is shown working in MTNL in 1984 but it was actually established in 1986. But even if we ignore these errs, I couldn’t connect with the story.
I felt the story flow was somewhat like Shershah movie where they were showing the flashbacks of how Akshay and Vaani fell in love, got married and how he only wanted to crack an IAS exam but he is secretly hired as a RAW agent.
By the way, Akshay’s code name is Bell bottom.
So, the main story of how Bell bottom helped save the 210 hostages from the hijackers, is of about the last 30 minutes of the movie. The entire is all about showing bell bottoms personal life, how he lost his mother (air pressure dips in a stationary plane, not sure how) and now wanted to take the revenge from the hijackers etc.
Also, in the last part, he just changes the weather report (he was lucky) and is able to save the hostages. Imagine if there was no sandstorm forecast in the report, how would he had been able to save the people?
Lara Dutta as Indira Gandhi has nailed her performance and I couldn’t recognise her at first.
And I didn’t know RAW recruits like this, seemed like a kidnap to me.
I found the movie really slow and couldn’t connect much. I didn’t feel the patriotism or curiosity.
All in all, it is a one-time watch but don’t keep an expectation that you are watching a movie based on true events. It is not exactly based on true events. Watch it like a normal Akshay kumar movie with all the herogiri. Kuch khiladi types naam rakhna chaiye tha movie ka!
