World Water Day is celebrated on 22nd of March every year, the United Nations declared this day to be celebrated for water in the year 1992. The intention behind celebrating this day for water is to create awareness about the importance of water to public and also implement strategies for sustainable management of freshwater resources. In 2015, United Nations adopted Sustainable Development Goals in order to end poverty, protect the planet and provide sustainable future for all by 2030.
There are 17 sustainable development goals that were introduced as a part of this framework. World Water Day is celebrated to focus on the 6th goal of the SDG: clean water and sanitation for all by 2030.
A new World Water Development Report is released each year on or before World Water Day, to provide decision-makers with tools to frame and implement sustainable water policies. The annual theme for World Water Day is aligned based on this report. In 2022, World Water Day is celebrated under the theme “Groundwater: Making the invisible visible”, and UNESCO is the main UN agency.
Because of the increasing growth of population, the need for drinking water also increases and it will not be feasible to depend on natural water resources alone. Challenges in access to water and increasing pollution are seen all along the food supply chain – including food processing – affecting food hygiene, nutrition, health and ecosystem services posing major risks to vulnerable populations.
Let us all join together and implement water conservation strategies at our home and office. All of us together can work in creating awareness about the importance of saving water at our office by preparing creative charts with messages and placing them at office lobby, elevators and posting stickers in toilets. We must hold a meeting once every year on this day to discuss about various water conservation strategies that would help make a change for better future.
