Perigee: The Moon’s orbit around the Earth is not a perfect circle but rather an ellipse. The point in its orbit where the Moon is closest to Earth is called perigee. When a Full Moon coincides with perigee, it appears larger and brighter than usual. This phenomenon is often referred to as a “Super Moon.”
Alignment: For a Super Blue Moon to occur, the Full Moon also needs to be aligned with the Earth and the Sun. This alignment allows for the Moon to appear at its brightest and most prominent in the night sky.
Now, the term “Blue Moon” in this context doesn’t actually refer to the color of the Moon. Instead, it refers to the occurrence of two Full Moons within a calendar month. This phenomenon happens roughly once every two to three years, giving rise to the phrase “once in a Blue Moon.”
When a Super Moon coincides with a Blue Moon, you get a Super Blue Moon, which is an even rarer event. The combination of the Moon’s proximity to Earth and its alignment with the Sun and Earth can create an awe-inspiring sight in the night sky, with the Moon appearing larger and brighter than usual.
