Independence day in India is celebrated every year on 15 August. On this day, in 1947, India got freedom from the British raj/rule after 200 years. It is a national holiday and everyone in India celebrates it with great joy.

Britishers have ruled in India for almost 200 years. Under the British rule, the lives of the people were miserable. Indians were treated as slaves and had no rights to say anything to them. Indian rulers were more like puppets in the hands of British officers. Indian soldiers were treated inhumanely in British camps, and farmers were dying of starvation as they could not grow crops and had to pay heavy land taxes.

Our freedom fighters struggled for India’s Independence. Famous leaders like Sardar Bhagat Singh, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Mahatma Gandhi, Subhash Chandra Bose, Mangal Pandey, Jawaharlal Nehru, Rani Lakshmi Bai,  Dada Bhai Naoroji and many more fought fearlessly against the Britishers. Many of them also sacrificed their lives to make India free from British rule.

Every year we celebrate this day by hoisting our national flag, doing parade and remembering our freedom fighters. It is because of our brave freedom fighters, that we are free today and living the life, the way we want. People often complaint about current political scenario but we all should notice the brighter side of freedom because now we can learn, earn and lead our lives unlike during the British raj when no one could even do a single thing according to their own choice.

I feel blessed to be an Indian and I salute our brave freedom fighters and thank them from the bottom of my heart for giving us this gift of free India. I pledge to serve the nation with all my loyalty and integrity. Happy Independence Day! Jai Hind!
