For the longest time, I thought a lighter life meant having fewer problems.
Less stress.
Less chaos.
Less responsibility.
But the more I’ve lived, worked with people as a life coach, and simply observed human behaviour, the more I’ve realised something important.
A lighter life doesn’t come from having less going on.
It comes from handling what’s going on differently.
And that’s where self-care quietly changes everything.
Not the Instagram version of self-care with spa days and candles (though those are nice too). I’m talking about the kind of self-care that protects your energy, your focus, and your peace of mind.
Over the years, through writing, travelling, building things online, and coaching people, I’ve learnt that cultivating a lighter life is less about dramatic changes and more about small consistent habits.
Let me share a few that truly make a difference.
⸻
1. Stop Treating Rest Like a Reward
A lot of us unknowingly live by this rule:
Work first. Exhaust yourself. Then maybe you deserve rest.
But your mind doesn’t work well under constant pressure.
Self-care sometimes simply means pausing before you reach burnout.
As someone who juggles different roles, life coach, author, blogger, traveller, and YouTuber, I’ve realised that productivity actually improves when you respect your mental bandwidth.
Sometimes the most productive thing you can do is step away for a bit.
⸻
2. Protect Your Mental Space
One of the biggest reasons life starts feeling heavy is noise.
Everyone’s opinions.
Constant notifications.
Endless comparison online.
Information overload.
This is actually something I talk about quite a bit in my book Shoo the Noises. The idea is simple: a lot of the stress we experience isn’t from our actual lives, but from external noise constantly entering our minds.
Self-care means learning to filter that noise.
You don’t have to respond to every message immediately.
You don’t have to engage in every debate.
You don’t have to absorb every opinion.
Sometimes peace is simply choosing what not to let in.
⸻
3. Simplify Your Decisions
Decision fatigue is real.
What to do.
Where to go.
What to post.
What people will think.
The more complicated we make our lives, the heavier everything feels.
A lighter life often comes from simplifying things like:
• your schedule
• your commitments
• your priorities
When everything feels urgent, nothing feels peaceful.
Self-care means deciding what actually matters and letting the rest take a back seat.
⸻
4. Do Something That Isn’t About Productivity
We live in a culture where everything needs to have a purpose.
Even hobbies become side hustles.
But some things should exist simply because they make you feel alive.
For me, travelling has always been one of those things. Exploring new places, observing people, and stepping into different environments resets my mind in a way nothing else does. It’s also something I occasionally share on my YouTube and blogging platforms.
Self-care means allowing yourself experiences that nourish you, not just things that move your career forward.
⸻
5. Learn to Be Comfortable With Your Own Pace
Another reason life feels heavy is comparison.
Someone else is ahead.
Someone else is doing more.
Someone else seems to have it all figured out.
But everyone is walking a completely different path.
As a life coach, I often tell people that clarity doesn’t come from rushing. It comes from creating space to think, reflect, and move intentionally.
Your timeline is allowed to look different.
Self-care includes giving yourself permission to grow at your own speed.
The Truth About a Lighter Life
A lighter life isn’t built overnight.
It’s built through tiny daily choices:
Choosing calm over chaos.
Choosing clarity over noise.
Choosing boundaries over burnout.
And most importantly, choosing your wellbeing as a priority, not an afterthought.
The good news is that anyone can start doing this today. Not through dramatic life changes, but through small shifts in how you protect your time, energy, and mind.
