Braj ki Holi: Why is Mathura Holi Famous?

Mathura is famous for its unique and vibrant way of celebrating Holi. Mathura is known as the birthplace of Lord Krishna, and the festival of Holi has a special significance in the city. You know, Mathura and Vrindavan are twin cities that have a unique way of celebrating Holi.

The week-long Holi celebrations in Mathura starts with Lathmar Holi in Barsana and Nandgaon, which involves women playfully beating men with sticks, followed by the famous Banke Bihari Temple Holi in Vrindavan.

This is more like a tradition. During the times of Krishna, is it said that Krishna ji used to visit Barsana to play Holi with Radhe and other gopiya but to defend themselves, the women used to chase him away with sticks. This is why Lathmar Holi is celebrated where women beat the men with sticks while men cover themselves from an iron shield. It is a interesting tradition and people from all across the world come here to witness it.

The Holi celebrations in Mathura are not limited to throwing colors; they also include cultural programs, dance performances, and traditional music. The Raslila dance, which is performed during Holi in Mathura, depicts the life of Lord Krishna and his beloved Radha, and is a significant attraction during the festival.

Apart from this, ‘Phoolon wali Holi’ is also famous. This is a main tradition of Banke Bihari temple where people play Holi with flower petals instead of colours. There is also a flower shower happening inside the temple. This is truly a divine experience.

Moreover, Mathura’s Holi is also famous for its sweets and delicacies, especially the famous “Mathura ke pede” and “gulab jamuns.” These traditional sweets are an essential part of the festival and add to the festive spirit.
