Are Hobbies and Interests the Same Thing?

Earlier today I was on a one-to-one mentoring call with one of my artist-client for session on personal branding and this question popped up – are hobbies and interests the same thing? She thought it was. But no, its not! Professionally, especially when you writing in your CV, resume, profile or mentioning in an interview, hobbies and interests are different things and in this post, I will explain you why!

What are hobbies?

Hobby is an activity that you pursue regularly and are passionate about. It fuels your mind and soul in way that helps you grow personally or professionally.

What are interests?

Interests are fields of activities or a specific topic which you might be interested in just knowing or learning but might not pursue it regularly.

What is the difference between hobbies and interests?

The main difference between hobbies and interests is that interests do not inspire the same level of dedication that hobbies do. Someone with an interest in astrology may learn just enough to understand it, while that same person may have a hobby of reading books or collecting stamps which consumes much of their leisure.

This means, you may be interested in history but as a hobby, you like painting or journaling.

In short, hobby is something that you do regularly. It might change over a course of time though. For instance, my hobby during my school days and college was dancing but currently, my hobby is photography and graphic designing. But I have always been interested in astronomy since childhood and still am.

What where to use what?

Well, when you talking about an activity that you do regularly apart from your work, say its your hobby. When you talk about a field, an area or something that you like to know/learn about but are not dedicated towards it regularly, say that is your interest. Understand that having an interest doesn’t require taking action. Interests are more thought-based while hobbies are more action-based.

Hope this helped!
