Kansa, the king of Mathura wanted to kill all the children of his sister Devki as soon as they were born because he was told that one of the Devki’s child will be the cause of Kansa’s death. Kansa kept Devki in a jail. On the night of Ashtmi of Krishna Paksha in the month of Bhadrapad, when Krishna was born, it is said that even the universe was on the side of Krishna’s safety. It was dark and stormy, the sound when Krishna was born was audible to the jail keepers. Vasudev, father of Krishna sneaked out taking Krishna along, kept him in a basket and carried him to Vrindavan to protect him and save his life. He crossed the river keeping the basket on his head. Krishna was adopted by Yashoda and Nanda.

This is the janm katha of Lord Krishna.

Every year Janmashtmi is celebrated with full zeal and joy. In Mathura & Vrindavan, the Janmashtmi celebration is something that every devotee of Krishna should experience. The Krishna Janm Bhumi temple in Mathura and the entire city is decorated with lights and flowers. It is a beautiful and divine experience.
