Situated in Uttar Pradesh, Mathura is Krishna’s birth place while he lived in Vrindavan. The moment you enter these 2 cities, you can feel the divine vibes and blessings of Krishna. Mathura is one of the sapta puri for Hindus. If you are not aware of what Sapta Puri is, Sapta Puri are 7 holy cities which bless the pilgrims with moksha. Other Sapta Puri (cities) are Ayodhya, Haridwar, Varanasi, Kanchipuram, Ujjain and Dwarka.

When Krishna was born, that time Mathura was the capital of the Kansa‘s kingdom Surasena. Kansa was Krishna’s mama.

Krishna Janmashtmi, the birthday of Lord Krishna is celebrated with full grandeur in Mathura. People from all across the world come to witness the celebrations. In fact, during the Janmashtmi, not just Krishna Janm Bhumi temple but also the entire city of Mathura and Vrindavan are decorated with lights and flowers. Even the shops, restaurants and hotels are decorated to celebrate Krishna’s birthday.

This is one experience that everyone should do one in a lifetime. The experience is divine. Wherever you go, you will see Krishna’s posters, photos, saints, Krishna bhajans being played and what not.

And if you are planning to go to Mathura or Vrindavan for Janmashtmi, then I would suggest you to book the tickets in advance because hotels are overbooked.

Best way to reach Mathura is by road. The city is well-connected with Yamuna Express Way that connects you with Delhi and Agra.

Train is also a good means to reach Mathura because Mathura station is a Junction station in India.

These are good options if you live in Delhi, U.P. or surrounding states of U.P.

If you live afar and wish to reach via flight, then the nearest international airport to Mathura is located in Delhi, at a distance of 147 km while the closest domestic airport is Kheria airport, Agra, located at a distance of 49 km. Taxis are available to this holy city from both these airports.
