Thalaivi starring Kangana Ranaut, is a biopic of Lt. Jayalalithaa, actor and powerful politician, is now streaming on Netflix.
Very few movies these days actually impress me, maybe the reason is an overdose of entertainment with a flood of movies and web series on the OTT platforms. For TRP (and obviously money), directors and producers are focusing on quality rather than quantity. But Thalaivi is a different movie.

Frankly, I didn’t have much knowledge about South Indian political history but I was briefly aware of Lt. Jayalalithaa’s journey. Thalaivi gave me an insight about the her life, her hardships and her inspiring journey.
Kangana proved herself as a versatile actor because this is a very different role from what we’ve seen her playing in her previous movies like Tanu weds manu (one of my favourites), fashion, queen and manikarnika.
The movie begins with a scene showing Jaya (jayalalithaa) being physically assaulted and the loose end of her saree was pulled out. This is a true incident by the way (and it made me think how illiterate and disgusting politicians at that time were).
Then starts the flashback of her life as a young actor and how she started working with MGR and so the movie proceeds. Some scene were really heart-touching. It really hits me when I come across a real life unrequited love story and Jaya’s story was such. Although, there were times when the movie felt slow and songs were not THAT good; but I think we can skip the songs when the story of the movie is interesting. I really loved the sarees that Kangana wore in the movie.
Arvind, the star who is best known for films like Bombay and Roja, played the role of MGR and he nailed it. There were moments when it was hard to identify him as Arvind. He nailed the performance.
Apart from these two, Bhagyashree and Madhoo had brief roles but impactful ones.
The movie left me so many thoughts of how women have to prove their talent and their intellect at every step, just because they are women and it’s a male dominant world. Not every girl gets chances like Jayalalithaa got but indeed her life is an example that if a woman wants, she can achieve anything she wants.
All in all, Thalaivi is a good movie to watch with your family; it’s inspiring, it’s heart-touching and one of the best performances by Kangana.
