Sometimes all we need is Hygge! But What is Hygge?

Today we are going to talk about a new term which perhaps you haven’t heard yet; or maybe you have but you don’t understand the need of it. We will discuss about Hygge (pronounce it as HeuGa or HooGa). So, what is Hygge and why you need it?

Hygge is a Danish term for that feeling of cozy contentment and well-being through enjoying the simple things in life. Just like that feeling, that vibe that I explained in my post Why I Love Autumn So Much?

If you have grabbed a cup of hot chocolate in a cold-outdoors cozy-indoors evenings with your favourite book or a movie, you have experienced Hygge without evening knowing it. Danish people considered Hygge as a part of their culture and lifestyle. They do it intentionally and planned and I think, it is very important for each one of us to experience Hygge from time to time.

Sometimes all we need is Hygge is escape from the daily chaos and do-away with stress.

Why is it important for us?

We are often so busy in life, running after our goals, our passion or perhaps money and success that we forget to keep up with our mental health. We keep our me-time, our leisure, our own happiness aside. This makes us less-humanly and more robotic.

Take a moment and think, what is the purpose of you earning so much of money when you don’t actually enjoy your life and take our moments for yourself?

Hygge is important for us to keep our mental health good. It gives us moments to feel cozy and happy from within. You don’t think about your work or other problems but you focus on the present moment and do what makes you feel cozy, warm and happy.

It also de-stresses you, relaxes you and resets you for the next day or next round of routine work.

What does it mean to experience Hygge?

It is not a rocket science but things that you often do in your daily life. Hygee is all about warm and cozy lifestyle.

For example, you take a blanket and put a heart-warming movie, it’s Hygge; watching a Christmas movie in december with a cup of hot chocolate, it’s Hygge; Cuddling? Yes, that’s it too!

How can you experience it?

I have always mentioned about having some me-time for yourself everyday, may it be for 20 minutes; but spend your time in doing something that you love and something that makes you feel warm and cozy.

So every evening or night (or maybe in the noon time), you can lit some scented candles, make some comfort food or hot drinks, have some throw blankets around and watch your favourite movie or read a book. That’s hyggelig (hygge-like) experience.
