It is believed that Jamsetjee Tata built the Taj Mahal Palace as he was denied entry to the ‘all white only’ hotel in Mumbai. However, this is a myth. The history says that Taj was built when there was a huge plaque in 1986 and the Palace was set since people were in need of it and it was purely out of love for the city.
It is said that Taj Palace by designed by an Indian. But, history says that it was designed by the well known English architect W.A. Chambers for designing the Taj.
It is said the the design was approved by the architect without even having a look at the direction, thus it is back side front. When the error was found by the architect, he jumped from the fifth floor and passed away. Such was the guilt feeling. The palace was built facing the harbour as Tata wanted sea facing rooms.
When the hotel first was opened to the public on in December 16, 1903, the charge for a single room was just Rs. 10 and Rs. 13 for the double room. Today, is is said to be one amongst the most expensive hotels in Mumbai.
It is said that during World War I, this palace served as a hospital. There were around 600 beds to serve the needy.
