Crying is Not a Sign of Weakness / Crying is Good Scientifically

Crying does have an effect on human body and some of it can be positive. When you start sobbing tears roll out. We humans can cry for any reason and part of the brain responsible don’t differentiate between sadness and joy, it’s all same to our primal brain.

It starts in the small region of the brain called hypothalamus, when you are happy, sad, stressed or feel any other kind of emotion the hypothalamus only knows to do one thing that is to react. It interacts with another part of the brain called amygdala which enables us to experience emotions. The amygdala charges the nervous system and then we start pumping out tears from eyes.

People who cry exhibit elevated heart rates and sweating. When you feel yourself about to lose some tears you begin to feel a hard lump forming in the back of your throat, the medical term for that feeling is called
‘Globus Sensation’. One can ease the feeling by sipping water or eating. When you cry tears come out but at the same time liquid comes out from nose and it is the same liquid that comes out from eyes as tears. Tears contain healing power and doctors suggest patients to cry rather than building up emotions inside. Crying is an exocrine process which simply means a process that pushes substances out of our bodies and other functions like sweating, exhaling is pushing out toxic substances. Crying releases chemicals that the
body produces in response to stress. Crying release certain chemicals that seem to ease both physical and emotional pain, a natural stress-reliever and painkiller.

Cry if you like it’s not going to hurt you but might just help. When we see someone cry, we have feelings of empathy or sympathy towards them, we feel a need to help them. We feel that a crying person is helpless and feel more connected to them and these feelings help us develop social bonds. Lots of animals create tears but humans are the only one that create emotional tears. Humans make different kinds of tears, emotional tears, reflex tears and basal tears.

Tears of sadness are called emotional or psychic tears. Reflex tears are made when we try to flush our eyes in response to irritants. Basal tears are a liquid force-field tears that we constantly produce to protect and lubricate our eyes. All three tears contain salt, proteins and enzymes but emotional tears have higher amounts of protein with stress hormones and natural painkiller. All three types of tears are secreted from the lacrimal glands in the eye, only the production of emotional tears is controlled by the hypothalamus
– an area of brain that regulates emotional responses.

Sometimes when we grow up, we suppress our feelings of crying and we often don’t give permission to ourselves to cry. Small kids are also discouraged to cry when it is a normal emotional feeling. If we build up emotions of sadness inside for a longer period of time, we would experience an emotional explosion and burst out suddenly ending up being over reactive. Crying is not a sign of weakness; it is a responsive reaction to an emotion built inside a person. The more we let go of our tears and pent-up emotions the more relaxed we will feel. This in turn helps us in controlling negative coping mechanisms. It brings
our mind and body from a disturbed state to a balanced state.

Sometimes we are not in an appropriate situation where we can release our tears, in times like this it is always better to find a safe place and cry. If we are not able to cry then our emotions often get triggered while watching a sad movie, sad music or remember a heartfelt memory from past.

It is really good to cry your heart out rather than keeping things inside you. Although, avoid crying in front of people or in public. Hope you got your answers!
