Mysore traces a historic legacy, rules from 12thcentury by the Wodeyars, the Hindu Rajas, who empowered it as the capital of the erstwhile Mysore state with the blessings of their chosen deity- the Goddess Chamundi.
An easy road trip up the hill from town centre, Chamundi Hill is devoted to Goddess Chamundeshwari or Durga who slew the demon Mahushasura. Locals, however, prefer the thirty-odd minute walk up the 1180 stone stairway with brief stopovers at the shrines of Ganesh and Hanuman and worshipping the magnificent five-metre high Nandi carved out of a single stone.
Up on the hill, past ceremonial shops, the beautiful gold idol of Maa Chamundi sits in the 12th century temple patronized by the erstwhile Wodeyars, while outside a larger-than-life colorful figure of Mahishasura stands holding a sword.
