Halloween is one of those festivals that can be spooky, silly, magical and fun, especially for children. And if your little one loves ghosts, fantasy stories and imaginary worlds, Halloween books for kids can be a lovely way to bring that Halloween spirit into reading time.
One such story close to my heart is Hallwey’s Halloween, a Halloween book I wrote for children.
So, who is Hallwey?
Meet Hallwey
Hallwey is a young ghost who lives in Eerie Town, a fictional little world filled with ghosts and Halloween magic.
But Hallwey isn’t your typical scary ghost.
He is young, kind and wise, and he has a rather unusual appearance with polka dots. He is also the youngest ghost in Eerie Town and is loved by everyone around him.
I wanted Hallwey to be a character that children could enjoy without the story becoming too frightening. After all, Halloween doesn’t always have to be about being scared. It can also be about imagination, adventure and discovering a world that doesn’t exist in our everyday lives.
What Happens in Hallwey’s Halloween?
The story begins in Eerie Town, where Hallwey gets the chance to travel to Earth to celebrate Halloween.
Imagine being a young ghost and experiencing Halloween on Earth for the very first time!
It sounds exciting, doesn’t it?
But things don’t quite turn out the way Hallwey expects. During his Halloween experience on Earth, something makes him sad.
And that is where his little adventure becomes more than just a Halloween celebration.
I won’t reveal the entire story here because I would much rather let young readers discover Hallwey’s experience themselves.
Why I Wrote a Halloween Book for Kids
When I wrote Hallwey’s Halloween, I wanted to create something playful and imaginative for young readers.
There are plenty of stories about ghosts, witches and Halloween, but I wanted to look at Halloween from the perspective of a young ghost who is experiencing our world.
Hallwey isn’t meant to be terrifying. He is a character children can get curious about, follow through his adventure and perhaps even feel connected to.
That is something I love about children’s books. A simple fictional character can sometimes open the door to a much bigger world of imagination.
A Fun Halloween Read for Children
If you are looking for Halloween books for kids, Hallwey’s Halloween can be a fun little addition to your child’s reading list.
It combines Halloween, fantasy and a young ghost protagonist, while keeping the story centred around Hallwey’s experience rather than making it a traditional scary ghost story.
Children who enjoy imaginative stories may especially enjoy entering the world of Eerie Town and finding out what happens when Hallwey comes to Earth.
And honestly, who wouldn’t be curious about what a ghost thinks about our Halloween celebrations?

Hallwey’s Halloween was first published on October 31, 2013. It is one of the children’s stories I have written as an author, and Hallwey remains a particularly fun character from my earlier writing journey.
Writing for children is a completely different experience from writing for adults. You have to leave room for imagination, keep the story engaging and remember that children can see magic in things that adults often overlook.
That is perhaps why I enjoyed creating Hallwey’s world so much.
