Teachers’ day is celebrated on 5th September every year in India. This day is celebrated because it is the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, a great teacher, a diplomat and a scholar. He was born on 5 September, 1888. He was a recipient of Bharat Ratna, first Vice- President, and second President of independent India. His contribution in the Indian education field is massive.

Teachers play a very important role in shaping up a child’s future. It is the teacher who makes a student ready to face the real struggles of life. The fill the plain canvas of a child’s brain with information and educate them. Teaching is one of the most respectable professions as well. In our epics also, it is said ‘Guru ka sthaan sabse upar hota hai’, means your teacher is above all.

History of Teachers’ Day

In 1960s, some of his students and friends approached him and requested him to allow them to celebrate his birthday, he said, “instead of celebrating my birthday separately, it would be my proud privilege, if 5th September is observed as Teachers’ day”. From then onwards, the 5th of September has been observed as Teachers Day, in India.

Every year on Teachers’ Day, the National Teachers Awards are given to the outstanding teachers by the President of India.

Significance of Teachers’ Day

Teachers’ day has a huge significance. Everyone has teachers in school, college or maybe at work. There are some teachers like one’s parents, friends, sibling who are unsaid teachers of life. This day is a perfect day to express gratitude to all the teachers who feel brought a change in you and educated you. Teachers have the power to make or break one’s mindset, one’s career and one’s personality. Hence, this day should be celebrated by everyone to thank their teachers and make them feel special.
