In March 2020, Bhutan closed its borders for the visitors after the number of Covid-19 cases increased. The India-Bhutan borders have been reopened after 2 years.
Bhutan, the neighbouring country of India, has been one of the most preferred tourist destinations for backpackers. It is budget-friendly and of course, very beautiful. But this Land of the Thunder Dragon closed it doors because of the pandemic.
The good news is, now it is open and that too, without quarantine. The Tourism Council of Bhutan mentioned in the press release that this time, the country will focus on sustainability and responsible tourism. This beautiful Himalayan country has also increased its sustainable development fees to $200 per night per person which is approx. 15500 rupees. Previously, this fees was $65.
The sustainable development fee for Indians is $15 (approx 1200 rupees) per day per person while it is $200 for other nationalities.
Yes, it has become a bit expensive as compared to previously, but surely worth. Bhutan is the first carbon negative country in the world and all of this practises is to ensure that they maintain this.
“The Government of Bhutan has re-strategized its ‘High Value, Low Volume’ tourism policy to ensure the sustainable use of tourism resources and to create an enabling environment for a vibrant, non-discriminatory, inclusive, and high-value tourism industry in Bhutan,” said Jigme Thinley Namgyal, Bhutan’s Consul General to NDTV in a recent interview.
Despite all of this, the country still remains one of the most budget-friendly international places to visit from India.
Share the news, as this might help someone in gearing up for their next adventure to Bhutan!
