If you love to watch historical dramas, you are going to like The Empire. This is the first season of The Empire starring Starring Kunal Kapoor as Babur, Dino Morea as Shaibani Khan, Drashti Dhami as Khanzada Begum and Shabana Azmi as Ehsan Daulat Begum in the lead roles.
It all begins with a flashback when Babur is on the battlefield thinking how he again escaped death and how his destiny again helped him live. Then cut to the young babur in Fergana (now in eastern Uzbekistan) when he, his sister and all the lead characters are introduced.
Now, I am not going to share the spoilers here so do not expect any!
The Empire Season 1 Review
The flow of The Empire season 1 is the journey of Babur till his last breath. I found the web series compelling and it seriously kept me hooked from first episode till the last; even after the last one, I wanted to see more.
I read a handful of reviews critising accent of Kunal Kapoor or Dino Morea but I just have 1 question for them – have you actually heard babur or Shaibani khan? Some people just need reasons to cut stars from the reviews. I was reading a review on livemint where they said ‘He’s (Dino Morea as Shaibani) clearly modelled on Ranveer Singh’s bloodthirsty Alauddin Khilji from Padmaavat,’ but clearly they did not read the book and were not aware of Shaibani’s ruthless character. Obviously, they saw the movie first and just wanted to compare.
I was surprised by the flow of the series how the present and the flashbacks were mixed to make it more interesting. Shabana Azmi shined out as always but so did Drashti Dhami. In fact, I couldn’t stop myself appreciating Dhrashti as Khanzada, babur’s sister; she portrayed such a strong character which amazing dialogue delivery. I remember how cute and bubbly she looked in Dill Mill Gayee.
The highlight of the series, Kunal Kapoor left no stone unturned to prove his acting skills. I feel he did justice with the role. At times, I felt pity for him when he began to reminisce his mistakes and punish himself. Another highlight is Dino’s character which is praiseworthy too.
After thoughts: The Empire Season 1
- I want to watch season 2, to know the unknown twists of Mughal empire and the story of Humayun
- I feel pity of Shaibani khan, I mean what he did was not justified but I just felt pity because of his traumatic childhood that made him ruthless. Also, how sad it was to see the person he truly loved betrayed him in the name of love; but. I guess that was his karma!
- Mughal were so political, mind-blown!
- Babur’s sister was a master-mind
The Empire season 1 is now streaming on Disney+ Hotstar. and I repeat, you should watch it if you like historical dramas!
4 on 5 from my side!
