I am publishing this post from Sri Lanka. Yes I am in Sri Lanka. This is my first time here and I am loving this country. Someone asked my yesterday on my instagram that Sei Lanka in December is a good idea or how is it like? So, I decided to write this post the share my opinion. I feel December can be a great time to visit Sri Lanka, depending on your preferences and the specific experiences you’re seeking. Here are some factors to consider:
Weather: December marks the beginning of the dry season on the west coast of Sri Lanka, including popular destinations like Colombo, Galle, and Bentota. However, the east coast experiences its monsoon season during this time. If you’re primarily interested in exploring the west coast, December offers pleasant weather with lower humidity and minimal rainfall.
Beach Time: The west and south coasts, including locations like Mirissa and Unawatuna, are ideal for beach lovers in December. You can enjoy the beautiful sandy shores, engage in water sports, and relax under the warm tropical sun.
Cultural Exploration: Sri Lanka is rich in culture and history, and December is a good time to explore cultural sites such as Sigiriya, Dambulla, and Kandy. The weather in these central areas is generally favorable, making it comfortable for sightseeing.
Wildlife: If wildlife is on your agenda, Yala National Park is a popular destination. December falls within the park’s dry season, increasing the likelihood of spotting wildlife such as leopards, elephants, and various bird species. Due to time restrictions, I skipped the national park (and also for the fact, I have visited so many national parks in India, now I am kind of bored of it, the only national park I wish to visit are the ones in Africa / Being very honest with ya’ll).
Festivals: You may also have the chance to experience some cultural festivities, as December is a month of celebrations in Sri Lanka. The country comes alive with colorful lights, decorations, and cultural events, especially in the lead-up to Christmas.
Considerations:
- While the west coast enjoys good weather, the east coast experiences monsoon rains. If you plan to visit places like Trincomalee or Batticaloa, be aware of potential rainfall.
- December is a popular tourist season in Sri Lanka, so popular destinations may be busier than usual. It’s advisable to book accommodations and activities in advance.
- Keep in mind that weather conditions can vary, and unexpected rainfall might occur even on the west coast.
All in all, if you’re looking for a mix of cultural exploration, beach time, and wildlife adventures on the west coast, December can be a good time to visit Sri Lanka. And not just december, but Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb – these 4 months are best to visit.
