This post has the list of top places to see in Chitrakoot and how these places are relevant to Prabhu Shri Ram.
|| Happy Ram Navami ||
It has been years since I last visited Chitrakoot but the memories of this place are still fresh. Chitrakoot has divine vibes just like other religious cities in India including Haridwar and Mathura. Chitrakoot is situated in Madhya Pradesh, close to the border of Uttar Pradesh in India. It is a place of religious, cultural and archaeological importance. The word ‘Chitrakoot’ means the ‘Hill of many wonders’.
What is Chitrakoot Famous for?
When Prabhu Shri Ram was on his exile (vanvas), it was the deep forest of Chitrakoot where He and brother Laxman and Sita maa spent 11 years 6 months out of 14 years. This is why Chitrakoot is famous and relevant to Shri Ram. This city has temples, ashrams and ghats on the river Mandakini that are must visit places in Chitrakoot.
Top 4 Places to See in Chitrakoot:
- Ram Ghat
This is a beautiful ghat located on the banks of river Mandakini. This ghat is the place where Shri Ram used to bath and take dips when he was living in Chitrakoot
- Sphatik Shila
A giant boulder made of Sphatik (a types of crystal), this place has the footprints of Ram ji and Sita ma. Our ancient scriptures has it, that Lord and Ma appreciated the beauty of Chitrakoot from this point and used to spend their times. It is located amidst dense forest, is a very peaceful and serene location.
- Hanuman Dhara
Climb some 600 odd steps to reach to this beautiful temple which was created by Shri Ram to calm down and soothe Hanuman ji when he came back from Lanka after setting it on fire. The temple has panch-mukhi Hanuman murti (five faced hanuman idol) upon which, natural spring water falls making it look surreal.
- Gupt Govadari
This is one of the most interesting places that we visited in Chitrakoot. You have to walk inside the cave to reach for the temple, as deep as you can. But here’s the twist, this cave is has water on it’s floor and the deeper you walk into the cave, the level of water rises. I have could inside the cave till the water reached my upper body. We couldn’t go beyond it because it was hard to walk. But you must visit this temple. This is approx 18kms from the main chitrakoot city.
Apart from these 4 places, you can also visit the Sati Anasuya Ashram, Bharat Milap Mandir, Museum, Hanuman Mandir also.
I have also answered some frequently asked questioned about Chitrakoot below:
