British rulers ruled in India for about 200 years. Lives of Indians during the British rule was miserable. History has facts and the world knows that India was known as a Golden Bird (sone ki chidiya) of the world because of its enormous wealth and abundance.  It attracted many rulers from all across and British too. Soon after, people of India became rebels and started to protest against British rulers who were doing torture on Indians. Farmers were dying and lives were miserable.

Our freedom fighters like Bhagat Singh, Mangal pandey, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Mahatma Gandhi, Subhash Chandra Bose, Jawaharlal Nehru, Rani Lakshmi Bai, and more, fought for the freedom of our country. India’s freedom struggle has always been an inspiration to the work as it was the most non-violent campaign in the world. Though there were many freedom fighters who lost their lives and there was uncountable amount of bloodshed. It was during the World War I, when India’s movement of freedom started.

The actual date of our Independence was supposed to be July 18, 1947, but Britain’s Lord Mountbatten changed the date to coincide with the second anniversary of Japan’s surrender to the Allied Forces on August 15.

On August 15, 1947, at midnight, India gained independence. Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru gave an iconic speech ‘Tryst with destiny’ on this occasion. We were declared free from Britishers.

Lord Mountbatten became the first governor-general of the new Dominion of India and Jawaharlal Nehru became the first prime minister of Independent India. The Constituent Assembly that was set up in 1946 became the Parliament of Indian Dominion.

Significance of Independence Day in India

This day reminds us of all the brave-hearts who fought for our country’s freedom and reminds us to be grateful for what we have now. t is because of our brave freedom fighters, that we are free today and living the life, the way we want. People often complaint about current political scenario but we all should notice the brighter side of freedom because now we can learn, earn and lead our lives unlike during the British raj when no one could even do a single thing according to their own choice.

“Vande Mataram” became a slogan to inspire India’s freedom fighters. It means ‘I bow to thee, Mother’ wherein mother means motherland as we often refer our India as Bharat Mata.
