In 2019 I visited Qatar 4 times and each visit was at least a week long. I was there for some events. I am a vegetarian and at first, I was worried how I will survive without veg food in an Arab country. And frankly, I am not the kind of a person who can just live on fruits and salads. I need proper meals to eat. Then a friend who was travelling with me told me about Desi Dhaba, an Indian restaurant in Doha.
Desi Dhaba is located near Indian Hypermarket at Fereej Bin Mahmoud in Doha, Qatar. It is run by an Indian and aces the Indian cuisines (punjabi-style, to be more precise).
The first thing I tried was the Gol-gappes and God it was amazing. We then, had dinner and I must say it was amazing.
It’s not that I have not tried Indian veg food in Doha in other places, I have been to Sarvana Bhawan, Roti aur Boti, Sangeeta, Zaffran and Rajdhani, but I felt Desi Dhaba is one of the best. Though it’s not a pure vegetarian restaurant but yes, you can expect good quality Indian cuisine here, mostly Punjabi. I feel it is better to say you get good punjabi food here at this restaurant.
Decor of this place gives you the vibe of an Indian dhaba (duh, obviously: Desi Dhaba) but then prop used such as Dhaphli, dhol, steel sign-board and the ghanta (big bell) at the entrance, it all gives a very quirky vibes.
They have put the old Bollywood movie posters on their walls and the Bollywood buff inside me, felt really happy on seeing this.
The price is also reasonable. You can get food for two at approximately QAR100.
I visited here 4-8 times during all of my visits to Qatar and I tried almost every veg dish.
I highly recommend you to try Paneer tikka, Paneer ghanchakkar, Chole, Lehsuni Dhaba dal, and of-course Gol Gappe.
All in all, I liked Desi Dhaba and recommend you visit this place for some scrumptious Indian food at a very reasonable cost. And yes, I didn’t feel I wasn’t in India when I was there, so just in case you begin to miss India in Qatar, then you should spend some time here eating Indian chaat and chilling with some Bollywood music playing in the background.
P.S: Notice the bell that I am trying to ring in the photo above! 😀
