Cafe Mondegar, Mumbai: Enjoying the beautiful autumn season? The cool breeze in the morning and the dusky sun rays pins the arrival of winter after some days. Fall is indeed the most favorite season of mine. And of-course, right now its’s kinda pre-fall here in Mumbai so… I am pretty much enjoying it. In Mumbai there are many renowned cafes for people like us to spend time and gossip with friends sipping hot coffee and snacks.
Cafe Mondegar in Colaba is one such, which is actually 140 years old cafe. It is also known for its Mario Miranda sketches and the vintage juke box. The cuisines are café, Italian, continental and Chinese. Famous painter Mario Miranda hand painted the walls of this cafe which is really unique.
Also, another thing that impressed me was the menu. They don’t give physical menus, instead the table top itself is a menu card and you can just sit and order. See!
When I visited the Cafe Mondegar, in colaba it 5 p.m. Jaico (my publishers) office is in fort, so Colaba is just 5 minutes away from fort.
I ordered the vegetable grilled sandwich along with the hot cappuccino coffee. It was fine, nothing special! I also ordered Veg Soup, Veg Hakka Noodles. The taste was okay but service was really really late.
Cafe Mondegar, in Colaba reviewing will not be complete until I write about its very well-known vintage Juke box.
The music and the tuning are so pleasant to hear and you will enjoy all kinds ranging from classic melodious to the rocking tunes. The juke box can be played as per the choice of your songs and tunes. You will have to purchase a Rs. 50 coin and you can play 3 songs of your choice.
The classic numbers are wonderful to hear.
I selected ‘summer of 69’, ‘Till the end of time’, ‘notice me’.
The cost of 2 people is 1100/- INR and the Cafe Mondegar is opened from 7.30 am to 11.30 pm. Both veg and non-veg delicacies are served with night life and pub facilities.
The place Cafe Mondegar is mostly crowded during the evening timing. Visit this cafe and enjoy the food and the awesome classic tracks which will be played as per your choice in its juke box.
Cafe Mondegar Honest Review
The place is always crowded and has lack of space. It becomes too crowded at time and you don’t find place to walk! So, honestly it is not worth the hype. I did not like it THAT much that I say it is my favourite. Even the food was good but nothing out-of-the-world. Yes the place could have been much better if it had AC in the whole cafe. There is a separate sitting area inside which is air conditioned but trust me, that place is so tiny that you cannot even walk without asking the other people to move their chairs to make space and trust me, it is very annoying. Imagine, you are eating something and every now and then, you can to get up and shift so that other can pass by.
I also found it a bit pricey. Yes it is expensive. I believe the hype is because of its interior, the jukebox and the graffiti wall. If you ask me, I am not going there ever again. I prefer places with calm ambiance and AC or open bistro where you can enjoy your meals. Even Mc Donald’s have space to walk. Duh!
