Movie Review War 2 – It’s Good but No Comparison with OG War

When War released in 2019, it set a new benchmark for Bollywood action thrillers—stylish, fast-paced, and gripping. Naturally, expectations were sky-high for War 2, especially with Ayan Mukerji stepping in as director and Jr NTR joining Hrithik Roshan in YRF’s Spy Universe. The result? A grand, ambitious spectacle with moments that impress, but also one that doesn’t quite capture the magic of the original.

  • Hrithik Roshan returns as the suave Major Kabir. (The best part of the movie, forever Hrithik fangirl)
  • Jr NTR, in his Bollywood debut, plays the menacing antagonist and arguably steals several scenes.
  • Kiara Advani adds glamour and energy as Kavya Luthra, though her role feels underused.
  • Ashutosh Rana reprises Colonel Luthra, and Anil Kapoor joins the spy-verse ensemble.

Plot Hint

The story takes Kabir on a global mission spanning Spain, Italy, Russia, Japan, Abu Dhabi, and India, as he faces off against a mysterious syndicate led by Jr NTR’s character. What unfolds is a mix of betrayal, patriotism, and personal stakes—woven together with high-octane action sequences, exotic locations, and stylish visuals.

Movie Review

Here’s where it gets tricky. On the surface, War 2 has everything you’d expect: jaw-dropping action, Hrithik’s magnetic screen presence, Jr NTR’s powerhouse performance, and slick camerawork. The background score pumps adrenaline, and some fight sequences (especially Hrithik vs NTR face-offs) are pure crowd-pleasers.

But the screenplay often feels stretched thin. While the first half delivers thrill and pace, the second half dips into melodrama, forced emotions, and over-the-top sequences. At times, it felt like I was watching a larger-than-life South masala movie, complete with over-dramatic dialogues and gravity-defying stunts. Other times, it leaned too heavily into emotional flashbacks, slowing down the momentum.

The action itself is a double-edged sword—yes, it’s grand and stylish, but some stunts cross the line from thrilling to illogical. Add to that underwritten side characters (Kiara deserved more), and the overall narrative feels less tight compared to the OG War.

Overall …

War 2 is entertaining, no doubt. It has scale, style, and performances that shine. But compared to the original, it lacks freshness and storytelling depth. The film will please action lovers and Spy Universe fans, but if you were hoping for the same sharpness and novelty of War, you might walk out thinking—“Good, but not great.”
