We have beautiful mountains, green forests, deserts, waterfalls, plateaus, plains, and what not! In this post, I especially want to talk about the Lake Cities in India. There are 7. Yes 7! Usually people either talk about Nainital or Udaipur but here we are going to discuss all popular 7 lake cities in India that you must visit at least once. These cities are called as either Lake Cities or City of Lakes.
7 Lake Cities in India:
1. Nainital
I had to begin my list with my favourite weekend getaway, Nainital. Situated in Uttarakhand, Nainital is known as the ‘city of lakes’ from its fresh water Naini lake. This is really a beautiful hill station. Not just Naini lake, but there are over 15 lakes on the out skirts of Nainital including Bhimtal, Sattal, Naukuchiatal, Ram Sita Tal to name a few.
Best time to visit: All year around, avoid visiting during festivals or long weekends as it is heavily crowded
2. Udaipur
Udaipur, located in Rajashthan is one of the most beautiful lake cities of India. There are many beautiful lakes in this city including the 12th century lake, Pichola Lake is the oldest and largest lake of the state. Other famous lakes are Rajsamand lake and swaroop sagar.
Best time to visit: Between september and march
3. Thane
Surprised to see Thane in this list? Well, you will be more surprised to know that this city in Maharashtra, Thane has 33 lakes within its premises. The most famous lakes are Upvan lake and Talao Pali lake. Read 33 Lakes of Thane β Experience nature at its best within the city for more!
Best time to visit: October to April
4. Bhopal
Bhopal, the capital city of Madhya Pradesh is also known as the city of lakes because of its 10+ beautiful lakes. The most famous is the Upper lake which is also known as the marine drive of Bhopal. Other famous lakes are Preet nagar lake, Motia lake, Munshi Hussain Khan talab, Manit lake to name a few.
Best time to visit: Oct to April
5. Shillong
The beautiful city of Shillong is the capital of Meghalaya. Shillong which means “The Abode of Clouds” which perfectly suits this beautiful hill station of North East. Shillong get rainfall all through the year which makes one of the main reason why this place is so pollution-free and got a naturally fresh ambience. This city of lakes also has beautiful waterfalls. The most famous lake is Umium lakes which also a popular choice for Hindi movies.
Best time to visit: December – April
6. Srinagar
We are talking about Lake cities of India, how can we not mention SRINAGAR – the most loved lake city of India aka Venice of India. This beautiful city in Jammu & Kashmir is located on the banks of river Jhelum. The famous lakes here are Dal Lake and Wular Lake. Interesting fact about Wular lake is that it is Asia’s largest freshwater lake and was formed due to tectonic movements.
Best time to visit: all year around
7. Kodaikanal
Here the last, but not the least, Kodaikanal, on our list of beautiful lake cities in India. Kodaikanal is beautiful and mystic hill station of Tamil Nadu. When I visited Kodaikanal, I instantly fell in love with its natural and calming beauty. The must visit lakes in Kodaikanal are Kodai lake, Berijam lake and Mannavanur Lake.
Best time to visit: All year around
