Finally, I saw Squid Game on Netflix, currently the most popular korean web series. Memes, videos, content creators and gamers have already hyped this series so much that I decided to watch it. If you are from India and like to watch any and every movie, I want you to recall Imran Khan and Sanjay Dutt starring LUCK released on 2009. The moment I first saw the first two episodes of Squid Game, Luck movie was all I could think of. For those who don’t know, in Luck, they tracked the most broke people who had a huge debt on their heads but no where to go. They are asked to participate in various deadly games where the one who lost, lost to death. They were also rewarded with huge amount of money and that movie also had betters and filthy rich VIPs from foreign to watch the game. The difference between these 2 is that in Luck, luck played the main role and here, the talent of playing games and judgement skills helped.

I don’t know how but the main plot is somewhat similar. In fact, in the end the movie luck made a little sense but Squid Game last 2 episodes were a major turn-off. They couldn’t explain why the main creator who dies in the last episode created this game. I mean, just before dying he says ‘I wanted to have fun’ but that is so senseless. Also, after he dies, again, the recruiters of the game are spotted on the subway recruiting new players.
There were many sequences where I felt bored because of their stories and discussions. I skipped many times.
So, if you still haven’t understood the plot of Squid Game, well here you go! 456 players who have heavy debt on their heads and no money at all, are recruited to play little kids’ games but with a deadly twist. If the player gets eliminated or lose, either it dies or its shot dead. And the winner gets billions and trillions of money. But there has to be only 1 winner.
Everything is organised in the game but at one point, it feels so weird and filthy because of the voilence and blood-shed. I mean, they are showing 100s of people killed and then cremated. There were many disturbing scenes such as a doctor doing open operations and what not!
I still cannot decode why this series is so popular. Maybe, they have a good PR agency. Because, I have seen many other web series far far better than this one and still not attaining that much of popularity. Or maybe, the reason why I didn’t like Squid Game so much is because it has no good storyline and not my kinda genre.
All in all, I just want to my Squid Game review with one line – If they make a sequel, I am NOT going to watch it. Not worth the time and interest!
Going to watch FRIENDS now, to reset my mind and release the impression of those blood-shed and disturbing scenes!
And yes, if you REALLY REALLY liked it, reading this review after watching it and feeling angry about my honest review, well all I can say is – some like red some like blue.. different people have different choices, so what to do! 🙂
