I am a regular at journaling. In fact, I can’t recall a day when I didn’t open my journal and scribble in it. I always suggest my mentees whom I mentor for growth, success and mindset-shift, to always maintain a journal. Keeping a career journal is a wonderful habit of recording ideas, concepts and several experiences that can be used for references later on in life. The practice of maintaining has been there for a long time. Journal can be kept by any age group. It is not necessary that an entry has to be made in the journal every day rather career journal is different and once-in-a-week entry would also be sufficient.
What is a career journal?
Mostly people think that journals are more like the personal diaries. But it is a myth! But actually a journal more than a personal diary, it is used recording events and experiences. Career journal is a journal that is maintained especially for career highs and lows and future prospects.
6 Powerful reasons to keep a career journal:
1. Keeping a journal will help you grow:
Keeping a journal will keep you happy, contented and will make you more mindful. It creates balance in your life and you stay positive in life, which in turn will help you achieve your career goals successfully.
2. Register good ideas:
It is not necessary that all the good ideas strike when you need them the most. A good idea can strike in a washroom, just before bed or while cooking your meals. So, when you are maintaining a journal you can keep a record which will ignite your creativity, improve your communication skills and boost your confidence to a great extent.
3. Pen down good suggestions from mentors:
Many a times there are people who impress you in your career. They may be in your office or the ones you meet during your conferences or seminars. They provide you with valuable advices and suggestions, which you want to, retain and use them when required. These priceless ideas help you in your struggling days and keep you geared up. So, you want to keep these ideas with you all your life.
4. Keeping a journal can help you vent out your feelings:
At times you are screamed at by your superiors, dissatisfied clients and you have to control your feelings and stay quiet. Keeping a journal can help you vent out your frustrations privately in your journal. There is no need to bottle up your negative emotions and restoring them in a journal can keep the pressure off your head and be relaxed.
5. You can keep all the compliments you received in your career journal:
Keeping the record of all the compliments you receive from your friends bosses and superiors can be very valuable in the upcoming years. It boosts your morale when the goings are tough and secondly you will remember forever the good things people have said about you.
6. Imagine your future / Use it as a vision board:
Maintaining a career journal will help you to figure out what you want to do in future. If you spend just 20 minutes in a day to write a description about ‘yourself’ can help you to develop optimism and sense of happiness. Instead of getting stuck in your daily routine, just think and jot down your opportunities for growth. After that build the roadmap to know where you wish to go to achieve your goals.
Hope this helps!
