1. They are addicted:
The Nicotine is what gets smoker addicted to smoking. It is highly addictive, and some doctors claim that it is even more addictive than hardcore drugs like cocaine or heroine. After a certain period, the smokers body craves for nicotine, forcing the person to continue smoking.
2. They become Psychologically Dependent on Cigarettes:
Smokers associate smoking with the feeling of calmness. They form a sort of mental dependency on cigarettes as a form of a stress buster for when they are anxious.
3. They like smoking:
Sometimes smokers say that they smoke because they enjoy smoking. They don’t enjoy smoking per say, but they don’t like the feeling they have when they don’t smoke, as in they tend to be more restless or anxious when they don’t smoke. And also when they become addicts, their bodies literally crave for nicotine, which when not provided makes them feel sick.
4. To lose weight:
Some people really do smoke to lose weight. Smoking cigarettes actually suppress your appetite, so that you aren’t hungry and you tend to eat less. It also suppresses your sense of taste and smell, consequently food doesn’t taste that great. So when one quits smoking, they sometimes gain weight, as their appetites go back to normal and food starts to taste so much better!
5. To fit in socially:
Some people consider themselves social smokers, because they start out by only smoking when around other smokers. But invariably they too turn into addicts. Its totally a myth that people who smoke look cool and classy!
6. Peer pressure:
Most teens start to smoke because of peer pressure. Their friends smoke, and it seems like the “cool” thing to do, and they want to fit in with everyone else. So they also start smoking to become a part of the “cool” and “grownup” group.
7. Their parents smoke:
Studies show that children who grow-up in a smoking household, become smokers themselves. As it is something they have watched their parents do, they inevitably turn to it also.
