Navratri, as the name depicts, 9 nights, depicts the holy descent of Goddess Durga from her heavenly abode to bless us. During these 9 days, 9 forms of Devi are worshipped. The climatic change of beginning of autumn season is considered to be the appropriate season to worship Goddess Durga. The dates depend on the lunar calendar and thus are varying each year.

The women celebrate the 9 days by wearing 9 different colored attires during the season. On the 10th day, the occasion of Dasara or Dussehra is celebrated which was in accordance to Lord Rama winning the war against Devil Ravana when the latter abducted the former’s wife and brought her to his kingdom of Sri Lanka. Diwali comes 20 days after Dussehra to commemorate Lord Rama’s return to his hometown Ayodhya along with wife Sita and brother Lakshmana after winning the war against Ravana.

People celebrate the navratri season by decorating their houses and offering prayers to different forms of Goddesses Shakti. The 9 forms include Durga, Kali, Amba, Annapoorna, Sarvmangala, Bhairavi, Chandrika, Lalita, Mookambika, Bhavani.

All 9 days turn out to be a big festival extravaganza with lots of shopping and celebrations done by the people. A Happy Navratri to all of you.
